Positive Self-Talk and How You Can Practice It
As you can tell by the name, self-talk simply means talking to yourself either in your mind or out loud. These are the things you tell yourself on a daily basis. Naturally, when you think negatively, you’re bound to be in a bad mood all day. This is why positive self-talk is important. Read on to know more about what positive self-talk is and how you can practice it yourself.
Challenging and changing negative thoughts
For one, it can be very hard to get rid of negative thoughts. We’re humans, we have emotions and it’s almost impossible to stay positive all the time. Nevertheless, practicing to change your negative thoughts into positive ones can be a good start. Let’s say that every time you look at yourself in the mirror, you constantly say that all your acne scars are making you look ugly.
Even though you’re making good progress with your skin care and your pimples are reduced day by day, you still think about your flaws. Instead, challenge those thoughts and think about how effective your skin care has been. It can be that simple.
Many people, maybe including yourself, easily find their own flaws and pay much attention to the things they don’t have. Let’s say you’re thinking, “I want to eat at this buffet, why can’t I?” This and a lot of other negative thoughts can flow through one’s mind freely. When you start being grateful for what you already have, it will be easy to find the positive things in your life.
Like in the statement above, you could at least be grateful that you have something to eat in your table when there are people in this world who don’t. Be thankful the challenges you face just as you are thankful for your success. No matter if it’s something big or small, remember to be grateful for its presence in your life!
Not comparing one’s self to others
It’s been said again and again, people don’t show their flaws and problems openly to the public. So there’s really no need for you to compare what you’re missing with what others already have. Just like you, other people have their own problems to deal with. They also don’t showcase those problems and instead show the opposite.
You might know someone who keeps buying new clothes and expensive accessories. You compare yourself to them and think about why you’re not living like they are. Then after many years, you find that your situations have reversed. When you were saving and investing your money wisely, that person kept living beyond his means and wasting his money. In summary, focus on yourself and don’t make unnecessary comparisons.
