Housetraining Your Dog
No matter how adorable your dog is, you’ll need to leave him at some point in time. You have to make a living too for him and for your family. When it is time to leave him, you’ll probably be torn deciding whether to leave him alone or have someone look after him (which is often not practical).
It is finally time to housetrain your dog. Housetraining your dog can be difficult: it needs positive reinforcement, patience and consistency. But you can be successful if you put your heart to it. Your goal in training your dog is to instil positive habits while he is inside the house. Training time will depend on the dog and how you are committed to it. When you finally decide to housetrain your dog, you have to consider different factors.
Factors like the size and his previous living condition will determine your training but it should not stop or hinder us. Dog training seminars aren’t hard to find in Singapore. But if you want to housetrain your dog by yourself, there are different methods that you can try on him.
Experts suggest that you begin housetraining when your dog is still a puppy – roughly about twelve weeks old. This is the right age where he is in control of his bowel and bladder. Here are some tips that you can consider:
- Confine him. You have to confine him first and when he knows what to do, you can give him the freedom he deserves. you can begin with the crate – at least in the meantime. When you put him in the crate, you can observe him whilst teaching him to hold it until the crate is open.
- Feeding schedule: Remember that consistency is the key. You have to set a regular feeding schedule. You have to take away the food after he is done.
- “Eliminating” schedule. Dog need to “eliminate” and the best time is during the morning and once every thirty minutes or one hour. After the meals, you have to take him outside and before you sleep at night, he goes out.
- Have a spot. you have to take your dog to the same spot. If you do this, he will think that that is the only place that he should “eliminate”. When he “eliminates” outside, you have to give him a treat and praise him at the same time. After giving the treat, you can also take them to walks around the neighbourhood.
If these are not enough, it is time that you implore the help of dog experts. There are many in Singapore so this should not be the problem.
